Log Book

OldShoe and I have just one log book between the two of us. We stamp both finds and plants and I usually make some comments about the park, the clues, the weather, etc. in addition to recording the date, the location and the planter for each box we find.

Our first book was nothing special -- just a spiral bound sketch pad picked up at an office supply store en route to Chicago. That book traveled all around Michigan with us, back and and forth to Chicago a few more times, to the U.P. and to the East Coast. Once it was filled, I picked up a little brown leather journal to use as our second log book. I loved the suppleness of the leather covers and the natural feel of the brown kraft pages. When it came time for journal number three, I stuck with the leather covers and small format like the previous journal. Between the soft red leather covers, were velvety sheets of handmade paper with a pink undertone and just a hint of inclusions. This is my favorite among the journals we've used to date.

At the beginning of 2005, it was time for yet another log book and I opted for a change from leather and went with a book with a very natural feel to it. It is covered in a burlap kind of fabric, and the pages are heavyweight handmade paper with little pieces of sticks and stuff and irregular edges. A very nice book, but just not the same as my little leather journals.
